I recently placed an order for some nootropics from Powder City and decided to do a write-up on my experiences.
Nootropics (aka noots) are chemicals that protect or enhance the function of the brain. These substances are typically used by individuals looking to improve memory, be more productive, and limit the effects of aging on the brain. More detailed information can be found on wikipedia & /r/Nootropics.
I ordered a milligram scale, Noopept, Phenibut, L-Theanine, & Phenylpiracetam. I’ve included a review of Powder City, as it can be difficult to decipher which nootropics companies are reputable. My reviews of the various products I ordered follow immediately after the Powder City review in the order listed above.
Overall, I’m impressed by Powder City.
They have a lot of positive reviews on their website – as expected. What business wouldn’t publish positive reviews of themselves? The big surprise for me was they had a handful of very negative reviews on their site. It’s unusual to see negative reviews on a business’s site. Most companies censor or eliminate negative reviews. It was refreshing to see that they allowed for negative reviews to be seen by the public.
Powder City came well reviewed from the community at /r/nootropics. Combined with their affordable prices, I chose them for my first nootropics purchase.
- Overall (4 / 5)
- Shipping (5 / 5)
- Pricing (5 / 5)
- Shopping Experience (4 / 5)
- Communication (4 / 5)
- Discretion (2 / 5)
Shipping was FAST. I often order from Amazon, eBay, and various online stores. Nothing compares to Powder City’s shipping speed. An email was sent verifying my order had shipped next day. All together, I waited less than three business days from checkout to product in hand.
As I stated earlier, Powder City’s prices are good. Pricing is competitive with, or better than the rest of the retail market.
Ordering from their site was quick and painless, products were easy to find, with thorough descriptions. While Powder City lacks some of the glitz and glam of more modern sites, it also lacks common annoyances such as offers to join an exclusive newsletter (*cough* spam *cough*), banner ads, or overly zealous sales articles.
Product packaging was not exactly discrete. Living with roommates, getting a few bags labeled Powder City that appeared to contain copious amounts of drugs does not keep prying eyes away. I understand that they are trying to build a brand, but the packaging was overkill.
Not a huge detractor, but it would be nice to change the packaging to something less conspicuous.
Nootropics & Product Reviews
There is a significant amount of hype for Noopept on the net. Part of me believed Powder City was paying reviewers to push the product. At this point, I doubt it. Indivduals inexperienced with stronger chemicals are most likely exaggerating its efficacy.
I certainly don’t think Noopept is a wonder drug, but it definitely has some benefits.I dosed two consecutive days, once at 10mg, and once at 20mg – both sublingually (held under the tongue for 5-10 minutes). Taste was quite bitter, so be prepared.
Day One (10mg):
- Slight enhancement in mood
- Increased ability to solve complex problems
- Slight increase in short term memory
- Increase in mental focus and clarity throughout the day
Day Two (20mg):
- Effects as per first day with no dramatic increase.
- Headache beginning at two hours after initial dose and lasting four hours in all.
- Trouble sleeping
Overall, I would use Noopept in 10mg doses as needed throughout the day. 20mg does not seem to increase benefits, while side effects seem to increase dramatically.
Noopept is no magic, but it has a clear benefit. Considering the very low price (a single dose being a few cents), it’s a worth a shot to experiment with.
Rating (3.8 / 5)
I was certain prior to ordering that Phenibut would be outstanding. Reviews on the net compared it to a chemical Messiah for relaxation. I ended up very disappointed, getting no noticeable effects from Phenibut. The recommended dose was 250mg, but some sites online recommended doses upwards of a gram. Perhaps I’ll go for a larger dose in the future after more research.
On the plus side, Phenibut is sour tasting and mixes very well with Kool-Aid. The raw powder reminds me of the coating on Sour Patch Kids.
I dosed two consecutive days, at 250mg and 500mg, both mixed into Kool-Aid around lunchtime.
Day One (250mg): No effect.
Day Two (500mg): No effect.
Rating: (0 / 5)
Edit: After doing some further research it seems that Powder City recommended a very light dosage on the bottle. Further experimentation with a gram had noticeable and pleasant effects. While not very useful for productivity, I can see this being very effective for someone shy or anxious.
Day Three & Four (1g):
- Relaxed mindset
- Increased ability and desire to communicate
- Decreased speech filter – an odd sensation. Some thoughts become vocalized before consciously attempting to speak.

I was very impressed with L-Theanine. It is essentially tasteless and seems to be water soluble as it mixed almost effortlessly into my morning coffee. Effects were pronounced but not overwhelming. NOTE: L-Theanine is primarily used in a stack with caffeine for Nootropics purposes. L-Theanine is not as useful without caffeine. In addition, L-Theanine & Caffeine can also be obtained in mild amounts by drinking Green Tea.
I dosed two consecutive days, at 100mg and 200mg, both mixed into morning coffee.
Day One (100mg):
- Increased focus and mental clarity
- Lessened mental fatigue
- Nearly doubled the duration of morning coffee buzz from 3 hours to about 6
- Slight increase in sense of calm & well-being throughout day; better able to handle mental stress
Day Two (200mg):
- Effects as per day one. No noticeable side effects, but no noticeable increase in positive effects either.
I will be adding L-Theanine to my daily stack for a few weeks to see the overall effects. I will probably dose with coffee at 100mg twice a day – once in the morning and once around lunchtime.
Effects seemed most pronounced for the first 4 hours and then were about half as strong for another 4 hours.
Rating: (4 / 5)
Effects were noticeable, but side effects were present. Reviews online claimed that Phenylpiracetam was both ‘speedier’ and a mood-booster when compared with Piracetam. I did not see either of these effects — though my memory was sharper, problem-solving skills boosted, and my drive to complete projects was markedly enhanced.
Taste is very bitter and the substance does not seem to mix well with water. Attempted to mix doses of 100mg and 200mg into roughly a teaspoon of Vodka unsuccessfully each day.
Day One (100mg):
- Greatly enhanced short term memory
- Headache starting 3 hours after initial dose, lasting roughly 8 hours
- Able to solve complex problems with greater ease
- Less talkative
Day Two (200mg):
- Effects as per day one, headache was stronger and longer lasting.
Conventional nootropics folk wisdom states that a choline source should be taken with any racetam. The science does not currently support this idea — however, I would highly recommend it. It is very likely the headaches experienced were due at least partially to not having enough choline to support the increased brain function.
I don’t think I would use Phenylpiracetam daily, but it is obviously useful as a study/productivity aid. It’s got the strongest effects of any of the products I reviewed, but the side effects may outweigh the benefits for anything other than occasional use.
